Charles H. Holmes, 87, of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, passed away Sunday, February 8th, 2026. He was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, on October 26th, 1938. Charles moved to Washington D.C. at the age of six with his family, then to Kensington Maryland in 1947. Charles graduated from Wheaton High School in 1957 where he was a three-letter standout in football, baseball and basketball. He began working for the United States Postal Service after graduation, serving for 35 years. He retired in 1992 as a superintendent.
Charles was an active athlete, playing on men's softball leagues and coaching little league football and baseball throughout the years. He was one of the founding members of the Southeast Volusia Athletic Association (SEVAA) in 1967 for youth football. He was a lifetime member of the New Smyrna Beach-Edgewater Elks club and a volunteer at Coronado Methodist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank W. and Helen D. (O'Neill) Holmes, his beloved wife of 48 years, Elaine Holmes, his sister, Carol Waldecker and sister-in-law, Linda Holmes (John).
Charles is survived by his children, Billy (Marlene) Holmes of New Smyrna Beach, Debbie (Mark) Pernell of New Smyrna Beach, Holly Levitt of New Smyrna Beach, Carolyn (Kent) Hounsell of Edgewater and Arlene (Chuck) Hoffman of New Smyrna Beach. Charles is also survived by eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, his sister, Judy (Baily) Hawkins, brother, John Holmes, brother, Roger (Elaine) Holmes, sister, Brenda (Mike) Whelan, and brother-in-law, Bobby (Carol) Waldecker. Not to be forgotten, his sweet pup and constant companion, Gabby.
Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Thursday, February 19th, 2026 at Settle Wilder Funeral Home, 406 S. Orange Ave, New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
Funeral and Entombment in the All-Faiths Mausoleum at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens will be private at a later date.
